Step 1: Create Your Account
To begin using The Understanding Engine, you'll need to create an account:
- Visit The Understanding Engine registration page
- Enter your email address
- Create a secure password
- Provide your name as you'd like it to appear to other users

- Click "Create Account"

Step 5: Start Your First Conversation
Now you're ready to start your first conversation:
Creating a New Conversation
- Click the "+ New Conversation" button in the Quick Actions section of your dashboard
- Choose a conversation type:
- Solo Reflection - Just you and the AI mediator
- One-on-One - You, one partner, and the AI mediator
- Group Discussion - You, multiple partners, and the AI mediator
- Give your conversation a clear, descriptive title
- Describe the main topic you want to discuss
- Set conversation goals (optional but recommended)
- Choose a conversation template if desired
For Solo Reflection
If you selected "Solo Reflection," you can begin immediately after creating the conversation. This is a great way to:
- Organize your thoughts on a complex issue
- Practice difficult conversations before having them
- Work through personal challenges with AI guidance
- Familiarize yourself with the platform before inviting others
For One-on-One or Group Discussions
If you selected "One-on-One" or "Group Discussion," you'll need to invite participants:
- Enter their email address in the "Invite Participants" field
- Add a personal message explaining why you're inviting them
- Click "Send Invitation"

Step 6: Review and Agree on Sub-Issues
After creating a conversation, you'll be guided through the sub-issue review process:
- The system will analyze your main topic and suggest relevant sub-issues
- Review each suggested sub-issue by swiping or clicking
- Accept sub-issues you want to discuss
- Reject those that aren't relevant
- Answer the prompted questions for each accepted sub-issue
Your conversation partner(s) will go through the same process independently. This helps ensure everyone is aligned on what topics need to be discussed before the detailed conversation begins.
Step 7: Begin the Conversation
Once you and your partner(s) have completed the sub-issue review, you can start the actual conversation:
- You'll be taken to the conversation interface
- The AI mediator will provide an opening message to set the stage
- Type your first message in the composition area at the bottom of the screen
- Use the AI assistance button (lightbulb icon) if you want help crafting your message
- Press Enter or click Send to share your message
The conversation will typically focus on one sub-issue at a time, with the AI mediator providing guidance and suggestions throughout.
Step 8: Utilize Key Features During Your Conversation
As your conversation progresses, take advantage of these helpful features:
AI Message Assistance
Before sending a message, you can get AI help to make it more effective:
- Type your draft message
- Click the lightbulb icon in the composition area
- Choose the type of assistance you need (rephrase, tone adjustment, etc.)
- Review the AI's suggestion
- Apply the changes if helpful
Private Guidance
If you need private advice during the conversation:
- Type "@mediator" followed by your question
- Only you will see the mediator's response
Indicating Agreement
When you feel you've reached an understanding on a sub-issue:
- Click the "Sub-issues" tab in the right sidebar
- Find the current sub-issue
- Click "I Agree" to indicate your agreement
- When both participants agree, you'll move to the next sub-issue
Creating Action Items
To track commitments and next steps:
- Click the "Action Items" tab in the right sidebar
- Click "Add Action Item"
- Enter the details and assign responsibility
- Click "Save"
Step 9: Review Conversation Summary and Action Items
When you've completed your conversation:
- The AI mediator will provide a summary of key points and agreements
- Review the action items that were created during the conversation
- Make any necessary adjustments to action items
- Set deadlines if they weren't already specified
- Export the summary if you want to save it outside the platform
You can access this summary and the action items at any time from your dashboard by clicking on the completed conversation.
Step 10: Continue Your Journey
After completing your first conversation, you can:
- Start new conversations on different topics or with different partners
- Review your conversation history to track progress over time
- Check off action items as you complete them
- Explore advanced features like conversation analytics and custom templates
- Provide feedback to help us improve the platform
